CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Lasers can reduce or eliminate wrinkles by enhancing the build up of collagen in the inner layer of the skin. As we age, the sun, time, and the environment cause the inner layer of the skin to lose several types of elastic fibers. This thins this layer, called the dermis, and allows wrinkles to form.

One of the ways of improving the skins elastic properties is to produce a controlled injury to it. This has been done for years with dermabrasion and chemical peels. The degree of this injury results in a controlled increase in the dermis' collagen. Since the mid 1990's, laser resurfacing has been considered the gold standard in wrinkle removal technology. It allows for precise controlled penetration that increases dermal collagen, decreases irregular skin pigmentation, shrinks the skin, and thus dramatically decreases wrinkling.

The procedures are performed with the patient sedated and take approximately one hour to perform. Following the procedure the patient is able to go home. Following approximately 10 days of healing, patients are ready to return to work.

In some patients, Dr. Schneider will combine the laser resurfacing with fat injections to produce a very natural but dramatic rejuvenation.

Fractionated CO2 Laser (DOT)

The skin-resurfacing treatment known as CO2 fractional laser therapy is a significant advancement for improving mild wrinkling. Combining the effectiveness of traditional carbon dioxide lasers -- what many consider to be the gold standard in wrinkle removal -- with a new technique, fractional CO2 delivers significant results with shortened recovery times.

How does it work? The natural aging process leads to the destruction of elastin and collagen in the skin -- the main proteins of connective tissue that keeps skin youthful and elastic. Laser resurfacing uses beams of light energy to produce a controled stimulation to the skin which works to produce new collagen formation in the skin. Here's what's new: Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing does this in a way that prevents damage to the top layer of skin, offering maximum results with minimal recovery time.

Fractional CO2 is less expensive than full laser resurfacing and it can be performed not only on the face, but also on the neck, chest, and hands. In many cases it can be performed with only a topical anesthetic. This means that for some patients, they do not need to go to sleep for the procedure.

Fractional CO2 is quick and requires about four days of downtime.

Yag Laser

The Yag laser is versatile, quick, and effective. It is designed to eliminate pigment. Therefore it is perfect for tattoo removal or brown spots on the skin caused by either sun exposure or aging. Most patients require no anesthetic for this procedure and it can be accomplished in 5-10 minutes depending upon the the size of the area. For most brown spots, only one treatment is necessary.

Tunable Dye Laser

The tunable dye laser is perfect for lesions caused by small blood vessels. These include spider veins of the face, red blotchy discoloration of the neck, cherry angioma's, rosacea, and port-wine stains. The laser energy is tuned to be selectively absorbed by the blood cells passing through the tiny vessels that make up these lesions. As the blood cells absorb the energy, this energy damages the inside of the blood vessels causing their destruction. With each pulse of the laser, a cooling spray simultaneously hits the skin to make the process easy.
