Breast Reconstruction |
Patients with breast cancer or chronic breast problems may undergo a partial or complete removal of the breast. Reconstruction offers the patient the opportunity to have a natural looking breast(s) recreated. Breast reconstruction may be divided into two stages: breast mound reconstruction; and nipple-areola reconstruction. The procedure may be performed during breast removal or at any time after the mastectomy. Reconstructions are performed either using the patient's own living tissue, or by using implants. This depends on the patient's anatomy and her wishes. Several months following the breast mound creation, the nipple and areola reconstruction can be performed as an office procedure. Breast reconstruction procedures are covered by insurance carriers and medicare (this coverage is mandated by federal statute). Dr. Schneider participates with most insurance carriers and medicare. |
